  • delivering authentic speech to a range of audiences, using appropriate intonation and stress, for example, a welcome speech to international visitors
  • analysing a dialogue or a text, identifying the tone patterns and rhythm, and developing their own texts with similar features, for example, 我长得虽然有点歪,但我跑起来可真快,如果你不信,那就跟我来,我保证让你目瞪口呆!
  • developing strategies to understand meaning when listening to diverse, regional Chinese accents, for example, inferring meaning from context
  • comparing their own Chinese speech patterns with a range of accents, and creating talk show scripts using different accents
  • watching a range of Chinese performances such as 山东快书 and performing their own version to the class, addressing the variation of tones, stress and rhythm, and analysing the similarities and differences between accents, making necessary adjustments when communicating with different audiences
  • using appropriate intonation and pronunciation when quoting sayings from traditional literature, for example, lines from poems such as 五言绝句
